[Stories] The Love That Should Not Be Part 2
Aiden woke up after a pleasant sleep. Odd, he had never really been able to spot the difference between a good night and a bad one, but that sleep felt pretty good. Spot had slept with him on the bed all night, Surprising to say the least. Only a day with him and it was like they had already become best friends.
Today was Aiden's only day off from his duties at the Castle and the day he usually goes to the market. He was just about to go when he heard the cat "meow" quietly. That's right, he had a cat now. He had to bring him to the market with him, since he couldn't just leave him here to get into everything and possibly even leave. He picked him up and they were off.
The market was alive with activity as usual. Aiden liked being here, with all the peasants. He felt like he was on the same level as the common man, a relief since the biggest problem with being a part of the Castle was the Hating of the towns people. Whether it was a grudge or jealousy, they collectively despised the Guards and everything above them. He picked out some food: Pig meat, Vegetables, some milk and bread. Nothing special, but more than enough to keep him alive for the week. He thanked the man for his bread and turned around, only to bump into someone. The lady dropped her things and Aiden. Apologizing all the way, helped her pick up her things. Handing her her last food item, Aiden looked at her face and recognized her quickly. It was Naomi, the girl he had helped last night!
"Hey, it's you!" Naomi said, smiling.
"Yeah it is! Naomi right?" Aiden asked.
"Yeah, and your Aiden right?" Naomi said, still smiling.
"That's right, and I'm sure you remember the cat" he said, motioning to Spot.
"Hello little guy!" Naomi said, petting Spot on the head. "Um hey, I need to go, thanks. Maybe I'll see you around?" Naomi said, starting to walk away.
She was leaving. He can't let her go, he had to do something! Say something Aiden! "Um, hey, Naomi!" he called, jogging up beside her. " uh.....mm... I was wondering...if....you wanted, I don't know, for us to meet up and have dinner around here, maybe?" Darnit Aiden, stop shaking, you’re just talking, so stay calm.
"um, I don't know..." Naomi said, looking thoughtful.
"I mean, I know this might sound a little awkward, we've only known each other a short time...but, I don't know if you feel it too, but I had this kind of feeling. Like I needed to get to know you...” He looked down. Damn, Damn, Damn Aiden! Why did you need to say that? Now she'll feel all awkward and...
"I guess I could, I can't think of anything else to do.." Naomi replied, smiling, her face a little red.
What? She accepted? That means...
"G-great! I mean. Alright then, ah, shall we meet around sunset, at the food plaza just down the street?" Aiden said.
"Sure, that can work"
Aiden smiled. "Sunset it shall be"
"..I only live with my mother and Grandmother, but I have to say, between the two they make very good meals" Naomi said. Aiden sat across from her, eating a little at a time, paying attention to what she had to say. It was his first time dating a girl, and he wanted to make sure he wasn't rude.
"Well, you've got some family which is great. Me, I've been living alone for a while. It's pretty boring, really."
"Oh, that's too bad. Well, you've got Spot with you now, right?" naomi said, smiling at the cat who had seated himself next to the two of them.
"Yes, that's true, having him around has been nice.." He said, taking another bite into his steak. It had been so long since he had had good food, real food made by professionals.
"...I have to ask, you seem to be ordering a lot of very expensive foods, how can you afford all this?" naomi asked.
"I.." He remembered, he wasn't supposed to be rich. He was NOT a member of the Royal Guards, he did NOT make a lot of money, he could NOT afford all this.
"I, I gamble...sometimes, and I guess I just get lucky a lot, I always seem to have spending money for times like this.."
"Hm, I see..." Naomi resumed eating. She obviously did not approve of his "gambling", but how much more would she approve, he thought, of him being an authorial figure in the cause of dictatorship?
They talked for a while longer, and then she brought it up. the one thing that would make things go rough for Aiden.
"..And there i was, not able to help as they dragged my father away. I could never stop hating the Royals, they don't care about us..." She was just about in tears. Perfect, now there was no way he could let her know. Maybe, MAYBE if he had gotten close to her, he could have let her know, but now he couldn't. Part of Aiden wanted to find someway out of this quickly. But he would never get a chance at a real life again; He just had to be smart about it.
"That's terrible!" Aiden said with as much emotion as he could.
"Well, I've just to work with it.. Hey, I've got to go, I'm glad we met." She said, smiling.
"So am I." Aiden said, returning her smile.
Well, he now knew what is, he knew he was in love, but it wasn't so easy. He now had a small wall he could never break down. He could never let her know about his job, or he be put right back in his low point in the universe, only lower, with the scar of what could have been on his heart.
How is he gonna navigate through this? Find out in the next part.
